Disordered diagnosis

As the American Psychological Association is in the midst of drafting the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) many within and advocates for transgender, genderqueer, and gender nonconforming communities are speaking up about the current diagnoses of 302.6 – gender identity disorder in children and 302.85 – gender identity disorder in adolescents and adults (GID) from the DSM-V. While GID is being considered for a proposed reform to “gender incongruence” advocacy groups such as GID Reform Advocates say this is not enough and are calling for its total removal.

In her recent article, Mental Illness and Transgender People, transgender advocate and author Joanne Herman discusses some of the problems faced by transgender, genderqueer and gender nonconforming individuals as a result of the current system which considers such individuals mentally disordered.
